Hammarlund HQ-170 The receiver is a Hammarlund HQ-170 from about 1958. This was a high-end receiver in it's day, and it is still very pleasant to use. It is ham-band only, 160 - 6 meters, triple-conversion, with the final IF at 60 khz. Following through on improvements to the HQ-170/180 receiver line, in 1960 Hammarlund introduced a “Lamb” type noise blanker.

However, Hammarlund apparently changed the component layout a bit when they went to the A, mounting some trimmer capacitors on top and changing the layout on the bottom. For example, I've discovered one discrepancy from the HQ-170 manual Hammarlund HQ170 troubles. Post by Nick Rhode » Dec Tue 22, 2009 1:00 am. Hammarlund HQ-170 HF RECEIVER W0UI Produced: 1958 - 1962 This receiver has always performed well.

Our HQ is located in Jönköping, Sweden but we operate globally both through manufacturing and sales channels.

The Hammarlund HQ-170 is a 17 tube super heterodyne triple conversion receiver that covers the 160 through the 6m bands in 7 segments. The receiver has an adjustable slot filter that provides up to 40db of attenuation to help eliminate unwanted interference over a 10Kc range. In addition, a slot depth control can provide an additional 20 db of rejection at any one single frequency.

Next↓ Top⇑ WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE HAMMARLUND HQ-170 & HQ-180? Simply put, the HQ-170 is a ham band only 160 through 6 Meter receiver. It does not cover the newer WARC bands of 60, 30, 17, and 12 Meters. The HQ-180 is general coverage 550 KHz to 30 MHz, ALL HF ham bands (including WARC) and shortwave in between. The Hammarlund HQ-170Aamateur band receiver tunes onlythe amateur bands: 1.8-2, 3.5-4, 7-7.3, 14-14.4, 21-21.6, 28-30 and 50-54 MHz. This radio does not have a built in speaker. There are 3.2 ohm speaker terminals on the rear panel. The suggested optional speaker is the S-200.

I have a Hammarlund HQ-170 receiver that I'm going to start on here shortly, but it was one that was originally bought without the optional Hammarlund HQ-170 This is a receiver that has been put down and maligned by most of the AM community due to it’s poor audio. However it is probably one of the best “battle conditions” receiver ever made. Due to it’s very narrow, squeaky tight IF bandpass (3 kc) it will not and cannot ever make good audio, but it wasn’t designed to. Following through on improvements to the HQ-170/180 receiver line, in 1960 Hammarlund introduced a “Lamb” type noise blanker. This device worked on Jim Lamb’s original principle of “punching a hole” in the signal to virtually eliminate the effect of ignition-noise interference.
